Sia - Live @ The Rescue Rooms - April 7th 2008

Sia Furler has come a long way since starting out in the UK with singles like "drink to get drunk" and "Taken for Granted"... Several solo albums and zero 7 tours later she has relocated to the US where she got famous when they used "Breathe Me" on the final Six Feet Under episode. Now she's back in the UK for a bit and touring with Har Mar Superstar, who provides a little dose of comedy stripping for the busy Monday night Rescue Rooms crowd. Equal parts sweaty and funky, half the crowd are loving it, and the other half are wondering what the hell just happened!

The stage is littered with soft toys, origami and neon tubes in the shape of flowers that look like they were drawn by a 6 year old using Microsoft Paint for the first time. The black lights come on, and Sia and her band come onstage dressed in black with flourescant bits and masks that make them all look like dayglo stick people, launching into recent single "Buttons", an army of mobile phones suddenly pop up to take photos and video of the lifesize neon stick people moving around onstage.

Sia must be one of the biggest acts who still dedicates songs to people in the crowd, and on this tour she is dedicating EVERY SONG to people who have visited her website and asked for a dedication. Hows that for a way of keeping your fans sweet? Playing mostly songs from her last two albums as well as some Zero 7 classics, Sia's energy and exuberance really rub off on the mesmerized crowd, it's hard not to get sucked into her happy childlike world when she is telling you stories behind the songs including "The Co-Dependant" which is from an unreleased animated pop side project. Sia's blend of soulful pop puts the efforts of Duffy and Adele to shame. Sia is the real thing. When she sings about heartbreak and loss, you know she's actually been through it, and in some ways it's a good thing, because it has made her music even more heartfelt.

Apart from a few people intent on spoiling it for everyone by talking through the quiet bits - (you don't go to the cinema to talk to your mates, why should a gig be any different?), the gig was fantastic. Sia's voice was on-form, and the band accompanied her brilliantly. Here's looking forward to some new Zero 7 and her unreleased cartoon pop concept album!
