FLYKKILLER – Shine Out Shine Out
Posted by AlMachine on Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Having founded The Free Association with DJ and producer extraordinaire David Holmes, you’d kind of knowingly expect where Stephen Hilton’s head is at musically; somewhere between the mid-nineties cross-hybrids of Massive Attack and Tricky and the more sombre leanings of Portishead. ‘cept Hilton’s not based in Bristol, of course…

Which is probably no bad thing as ‘Shine Out Shine Out’ resonates through the static confines of conventional trip-hop like a more experimental Nine Inch Nails with Alison Goldfrapp on guest vocals. Dark in parts, mysterious in others and undeniably captivating, Flykkiller sound so out of place that it would be so wrong to brand them copyists, yet by the same token their mismatched visions of austerity sound like they belong in another century, which some will argue they do (or did), which can only add to the confusion even further.

One thing’s for sure, ‘Shine Out Shine Out’ sounds like nothing else released so far this year, which can only be a good thing if Flykkiller are seeking any kind of creative longevity, which I’m sure they are.

7/10
