TOKYO POLICE CLUB – Tessellate

Despite the early promise of the band’s now-signature tune ‘Cheer It On’, Tokyo Police Club have since found it difficult to shake off the tag of being nothing more than Strokes copyists.

Sadly, ‘Tessellate’ doesn’t really do them any more justice either. Sure, it’s a fairly hummable tune that doesn’t sound out of place on Lowe or Lamacq’s radio shows not to mention many an indie club night’s playlist, but for a band with so much potential this fails to deliver in many ways, and more to the point, doesn’t set Tokyo Police Club apart from any number of bands out there doing a similar kind of thing.

Harmlessly pleasant then, but sometimes inoffensive can be just the same as mildly irritating.
