Savatage – Still The Orchestra Plays

This is somewhat of a greatest hits from the American Prog Rockers. This is heavy on the chorused guitars, epic production, big synths and no doubt bigger hair. Although overblown in places, Power of the Night and Hall of the Mountain King have a lot of Judas Priest and Deep Purple about them. Over the years they have featured some serious guitar talent in Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli and Alex Skolnick and much of that is on display here, take Legions for example. Even amongst the rock there is time for the epic ballads in Gutter Ballet, Summers Rain and If I go Away. Handful of Rain, I Am, and The Wake Of Magellan crank things up a bit more on the second disc, but you are never too far from a big epic ballad.

If you like things big, loud and rocking this is probably for you. Fortunately for their credibility they have managed to avoid the curse of the dad rock albums, but then again they probably miss the royalties they would get.

7/10
