Galleons - Swans

Galleons are a Nottingham based four piece who are very much a part of the new wave of technical “death core” kind of stuff which has been heavily influenced by bands like Sikth, Locust, Blood Brothers, Discordance Axis, etc.

If this is a sound you’re into, then you’ll no doubt love this record as it ticks all the boxes of the genre, from the frantic solos and shrieking vocals to the down tempo breaks and heavily triggered drums. This however is why it leaves me cold, as there is very little here that makes it stand out from the crowd. It’s almost as if the EP hinges around only two ideas; the female vocal on the second track which contrasts well with the rest of the vocals, especially when working in tandem with them, and the way this segways into what I must admit is a very nice outro of reverborous harmonics in an elegant interplay between the guitar and bass which provides the only space on the EP. Unfortunately it then goes straight back into the old tricks of the trade.

2/10
