CARTER THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE
Posted by claire on Wednesday, January 23, 2002
Wednesday 13th Feb sees Fruitbat, guitarist from the legendary Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine making his debut DJ appearance. He will be gracing The Rig decks at new weekly club night Charley Says. Claire Dyer catches up with him.....
Claire: The recent Who's The Daddy Now? Tour saw you and Jim Bob playing some Carter tracks, is it likely that you'll ever reform or re-unite for a full Carter tour?
Fruity: I'm afraid not. Not for the time being anyway, the time isn't right for us. We both feel that our new bands have so much to offer. Carter was a big part of our lives and a part that we are both very proud of. It was nice to dip into the back catalogue on the WTDN? Tours, but a full gig doesn't appeal at all at the moment.
What do you reckon to other bands like The Wonder Stuff and Neds Atomic Dustbin re-uniting for a number of shows and Jesus Jones getting back together?
I think that the Wonderstuff reformation has worked very well for them, not sure about the others though. I think that if the bands feel that they can still work and write together that's cool, but to continuously tour a greatest hits nostalgia package smacks a bit of Butlins Holiday Camps.
Where do you think you fitted into that whole late 80's/early 90's scene?
We did fit in quite well, although we were really nothing like the other bands apart from maybe Pop Will Eat Itself. We certainly had the terrible dress sense of the time ;-)
Why do you think the scene has become popular again?
I guess that music is a cyclic thing and it's getting to the point where it is long enough ago to feel nostalgic about the whole thing. It's like 'Instant Peter Pan', you listen to those records and your whole past comes flooding back ;-)
Do you have a favourite point or highlight of your career with Carter?
I still remember Reading '91 as the absolute perfect moment for us. That day was so RIGHT.
Favourite song or album?
Post Historic Monsters is a big favourite, it was a very honest album, a bit unpalatable for some, but all the better for it in my opinion.
Carter split in 1997. Why?
We were in the US playing to less people and generally going nowhere. We were fed up with it all. Jim and I sat down over a cup of coffee and decided that enough was enough.
Have you ever regretted splitting up?
Never.
How are the new bands, your Abdoujaparov and Jim Bob's Jim's Super Stereo World?
I must say that both band are going brilliantly. We both have new LPs out in the next few months and 2002 looks like being the best year so far. Both bands are slated for this year's Reading Festival. We are both working like dogs but having the times of our lives.
For those that haven't heard Abdou and JSSW, what can they expect and how do they compare with Carter?
Jim's Super Stereoworld is classy, classic, intelligent pop. Jim still has that unique way with words. Abdoujaparov is much harder and punky although we can do the classic pop ballad thing along with some surprising bit of pomp rock ;-)
What's next?
Well, for me apart from the above mentioned album and a tour to go with it, I'm continuing with my record label Spinach Records and also have my own Radio Show on Pheonix FM in Essex (www.phoenixfm.com ). Maybe the Rig gig is the first of my rise to fame as a DJ too!
