LISA 'LEFT EYE' LOPES - Supernova (album)
Posted by claire on Tuesday, October 9, 2001
Her left eye may be a tad lazy but the the rest of this lady is anything but and she is well charged up like a hot-rod scorching up the tarmac. Deciding that having helped to shift a mere 20 million units as one-third of supergroup TLC Miss Lopes gives it a go on her debut solo album. And this is not half bad at all. Effortlessly fusing together elements of funk, soul and rap and sprinkling the whole confection with a dash of fun she brings it off a treat. From the bouncing melodic opening track ‘Life Is Like A Park’ featuring Carl Thomas through to the stomping street anthem of ‘The Block Party’ this album satisfies on numerous levels and there is no denying the energy that bubbles up to give it an edge. Check out ‘A New Star Is Born’ for a song that comes periliously close to being sentimental but manages to avoid it by virtue of the lyrical delivery by Lopes having an undercurrent of pithy sincerity. This is good stuff and well worth letting your aural anvil enjoy the pleasure.
