Splendour Supports Local Music in Future Sound of Nottingham

The chance to play in front of a 20,000 strong crowd is the big prize on offer to local, unsigned musicians this summer when the hugely popular Splendour music festival returns to Wollaton Park.

Organised by community project NUSIC, The Future Sound of Nottingham (FSN) will give one lucky act the opportunity to perform the opening slot on the main stage at the festival on Saturday, 18 July. Open to entrants now, the first round of the contest invites local bands and artists to send in demos for judging by an expert panel.

Last year’s Splendour festival, run by DHP Family, boasted an impressive line-up of homegrown talent including Bramcote born artist Saint Raymond aka Callum Burrows. With a sell-out UK tour already under his belt, he was joined by 2014’s FSN winner, Joy Mumford, who has since been writing with respected artists such as Scorzayzee and indie pop band D.I.D, formerly known as Dog is Dead. Joy will make her second Splendour appearance on the Acoustic stage this year – the first FSN artist asked to return.

Mark Del, of NUSIC, says: “It’s a great buzz giving Nottingham musicians the chance to play the main stage at Splendour. Future Sound of Nottingham is all about giving local artists the opportunity to play big stages to huge audiences and showcasing their music to industry professionals – last year’s finalists Field Studies were signed to Denizen Management after Denizen boss, Spencer Wells, saw them play.”

Entries for the first round will close on Monday, 20 April and finalists will be expected to battle it out on the main stage at Rock City on Sunday, 14 June where the public and an independent panel of judges will decide the winner.

DHP Family’s George Akins added: “Splendour is a great showcase for local artists so it’s a real opportunity for a new star to emerge from this year’s Future Sound of Nottingham. Jake Bugg originally played Splendour’s small courtyard stage but went on to be the main stage headliner a couple of year’s later, touring the world and selling albums by the million. Amber Run and Joy Mumford are playing this year while Indiana, Saint Raymond and Dog is Dead have all played Splendour in recent years and gone on to greater success.”

Splendour recently announced two-tone legends The Specials and indie rockers James for the top slots on the main stage with Bananarama headlining the Confetti stage. The current charts will be represented by Lawson and chart-topper Jess Glynne who went to No1 this week with her single ‘Hold my Hand’. Promoter DHP Family, in partnership with Nottingham City Council and Confetti, has been working hard to cater for all the family by bringing together the perfect mix of much loved heritage acts and contemporary pop artists.

The full main stage line up is The Specials, James, Jess Glynne, Lawson, Roots Manuva, Amber Run and To Kill A Kingand the day will be opened by the winner of the Future Sound of Nottingham. Meanwhile, over on the Confetti stage are Bananarama, The Twang, Ferocious Dog, Iris Gold, Keto, The Swiines and Georgie while Joy Mumford, Eyre Llew, Hhymn, Jamie Lawson, Molly and Jack, RJMARKS, Daudi Matsiko and Cedric Peters make up the offer for the Acoustic Rooms stage.

Cheeky-chappie Brummie Andy Robinson will be hosting some great acts throughout the day on the Funhouse Comedy stage while there is plenty of entertainment for children including fairground rides, and a free kids area hosted by Big Top Mania, featuring circus skills workshops and shows, crazy inflatable’s, giant bubbles and Big Bear’s Big Balloon Disco.

NUSIC is dedicated to all things ‘Notts, Musical and New’ and aims to support unsigned musicians from the county.

Tickets for Splendour are on sale now and start at just £20.
